Andrew Onen, a multi-talented Ugandan personality, wears many hats in his career. He’s not only a comedian but also an engineer, events’ MC, voice-over artist, journalist, and entrepreneur in printing, branding and photography fields. One of his notable achievements is hosting “NewsLaughs,” a comedic Ugandan news show distributed through YouTube and various platforms. Andrew, a devoted family man with three children, embarked on his comedy journey while his second child was born prematurely. His impromptu comedy performances for distressed mothers at the hospital ultimately inspired him to create his YouTube channel.

In January 2020, Andrew Onen was chosen as one of the 26 fellows for an intensive multimedia journalism training and mentorship program by the Media Challenge Initiative. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he recognized the need for a more lighthearted approach to news delivery, leading to the creation of NewsLaughs, with support from the Media Challenge Initiative and its 2020 fellows. His passion for stand-up comedy, featuring non-vulgar content, also led him to perform on various stages across East Africa.

On December 5, 2021, Onen held his official debut show, “THE ANDREW ONEN COMEDY LAUNCH” at Fairway Hotel Kampala. This show’s proceeds were used to assist over 200 mothers of premature babies from Nsambya Hospital and Mulago Hospital. Andrew Onen’s comedy career has taken him to numerous cities, including Kampala, Arua, Lira, Gulu, and even Nairobi, Kenya. His talents were further recognized when he was invited by the World Food Program to perform a tailor-made satirical content piece on “Creativity in Challenging Times” at the WFP Head office on June 28, 2023.

In August 2023, he had the honor of being selected as one of only six Ugandans for a Theatre Puppetry Satire Masterclass by Kenya’s top multimedia company, BUNI MEDIA. This journey culminated in his role as a moderator at the trainees’ presentation in Nairobi, Kenya, on October 19, 2023.

Notably, Andrew Onen organized two comedy specials. “Apala-to-Kampala,” his first special, featured a record-breaking two-hour performance of uproarious content at the Uganda National Theatre on November 4, 2022. His second special, “Commonly Uncommon” occurs on November 18, 2023, at the National Theatre, starting at 6 pm.

In the words of Andrew Onen himself, “It’s time for you to laugh in your local language, with the proper Ugandan without propaganda!”
